The Minding Our Business Summer Program (MOBSP) will allow you to run your own business, during the summer. You keep the profits!  The program will involve training in starting and running a business; 4 Market Fairs; 3 Mentor-Support Sessions; 1 visit to Morrisville Lanes,2 field trips to New York City, 1 trip to the Columbus Farmers Market, 1 visit to Dorney Park in July and 1 visit to Clementon Park at the end of the summer. The training in entrepreneurship will be at Rider University. You will also participate in career planning activities, workshops, play games, and use Rider's recreational facilities.

 

Mentor Support Sessions

You will be assigned a mentor to help you with your business. You will participate in 3 Mentor-Support Sessions. Two of these sessions will be conducted at the Katmandu Restaurant on Route 29, next to Waterfront Park. One of the Mentor Support Sessions will be followed by a bowling trip to Morrisville Lanes. The mentors will help you prepare for the Market Fairs and will be a positive influence on your personal and vocational development.

Your Commitment
As a participant in the Minding Our Business Summer Program you will:

  • Make a commitment to attend the entrepreneurship training at Rider University from June 25 to July 10 from 8AM-4PM (transportation from Trenton and snacks and lunch will be provided by the program).
     

    • Attend the Orientation Session at Rider University on Sunday, June 24th from 3-5PM (a buffet dinner and transportation from Trenton will be provided by the program).
       

    • Attend all 4 Summer Market Fairs. On Saturday July 7th from 12-4 PM at the Hedgepeth-Williams School, on Wednesday July 25 Summer Concert at PJ Hill School 7-9PM, on Wednesday August 7 Take It To The Streets at South Walter Ave., and on Saturday August 12 from 12-4PM at PJ Hill.
       

    • Attend all 3 evening Mentor-Support Sessions. On Thursday July 5 from 6-8 PM at Katmandu Restaurant, on Tuesday July 25 from 5-7Pm at the PJ Hill Cafeteria, and on Tuesday August 7 from 6-8PM at Katmandu Restaurant.
       

    • Observe the program ground rules for responsible behavior.

Rewards for Effort and Responsible Behavior
If you attend these events and observe by the program ground rules for responsible behavior, you will be allowed to participate in the following activities:

  • A bowling trip to Morrisville Lanes on Tuesday July 24 from 7:30-10PM

  • Two Field Trips To New York City on Friday July 6 and Wednesday August 8

  • One Field Trip to the Columbus Farmers Market on Thursday July 19.

  • A Field Trip to Dorney Park & Water Kingdom on Wednesday July 11

  • A Field Trip to Clementon Adventure Park on Sunday August 12.

 The Registration Fee and the Installment Plan

The program’s registration fee is $150. We encourage you to pay this fee in full on Sunday June 24th, the day of the Orientation Session at Rider University (transportation from Trenton will be provided). You can also use the installment plan, pay $50 by or before June 24th and the remaining $100 by Monday, July 9th.  Pay cash or make your check payable to “Minding Our Business, Rider University”. Scholarships will be available for some students of families that cannot pay the $150 fee.


 Your Child Gets Lots of Value and a Chance to Grow
This is what the $150 registration fee will get for your child:

  • $100 to buy merchandise to start and run a business

  • training on how to start and run a business

  • workshops for personal and vocational development

  • transportation from Trenton to Rider University

  • lunches and snacks/juices from June 26th  to July 11th at Rider University

  • book “The Young Entrepreneur’s Guide to Starting and Running a Business”

  • school supplies

  • a MOB T-shirt

  • 2 field trips to New York City

  • 1 field trip to the Columbus Farmers Market

  • 4 Market Fairs

  • transportation and free admissions to Dorney Park and Clementon Park

  • 3 mentoring support sessions with food

  • 1 Bowling Night at Morrisville Lanes (transportation included)

The program’s registration fee is $150 but the real cost to you is only $50 (your child gets the other $100 to start the business). More importantly, your child will have a chance to advance his or her personal and vocational development and this cannot be measured in dollars and cents. Scholarships will be available for some students of families that cannot pay the $150 fee.

The key accomplishments of the 2006 Summer Program are:

  • Students scored, at the conclusion of the training, 30% higher than the average score at the start of the training on their knowledge of key entrepreneurship concepts.
  • Based on the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, MOBSP students have a significantly higher self-esteem score and the end of the summer. No significant change in self-esteem scores were observed on a control group of students of similar age and socio economic status.
  • Most students perceived improvement in themselves as a result of the MOBSP training in their: ability to communicate (86%), feelings about self (76%), feelings about their own future (71%), entrepreneurship skills (71%), leadership skills (67%), and as a student (62%).
  • Eighty-one percent of the students reported that they have become more interested in going to college due to the Summer Program. Fifty-two percent stated that their desire to start their own business is far greater than before MOB.
  • Average sales by student-run businesses in the first market fair of the summer -- $56.00.
  • At the last Mentor Support Session for the 2006 Summer Program, sixty-seven percent of MOBSP students plan to stay in business after the end of the program.
  • Coverage in the local print media included an article appearing in the Trenton Times:  “Students Learn Lessons in Planning”.
